There are several things vital for capturing great images and I always consider that capturing a persons true spirit is probably the most important. When it came to taking Chris's senior pictures I new this wouldn't be a problem. With an army of helpers we managed to move his drum set onto the river bank overlooking the Missippippi river. I'd intended to just pose a few images but for someone like Chris it's impossible to sit at a drum kit and not have a jam session. This worked out perfect as i moved around and climbed up and down getting the shots.

Ariel's Senior Photographs, Central and Baton Rouge, Louisiana

I love shooting people with character and Ariel certainly has lots of that. Her constant smiles and boundless energy made the whole senior photographs shoot in three different locations a real fun afternoon.

We started off at her house and her massive collection of shoes, I'm not saying there were a lot but let's just say a centipede would not have had cold feet. Not satisfied with that she also has an uber cool seat made in the shape of a ... guess what ..... yup a shoe.

Having finished shooting at Ariels home we headed for Baton Rouge. We photographed all over the town and finished at the old state capital. It was my first time at the old capital and it was well worth a visit.

Jeanette's Senior Portrait Session in Baton Rouge

Just before I left the comfort and warmth of Louisiana for the cold winter in England I had a very busy week where I photographed 4 sessions in a week.

The following images are all taken of Jeanette and were inside and around the state capital just before dusk. Amazingly the whole shoot was done inside of two hours (i think) as we had to be super-quick because we were running out of daylight.

We had great fun although we were warned away from the state capital steps at one point by the security guards. Unfortunately a young child had fallen recently and some of the drops from the steps down to the ground are very high so it's understandable they don't want anyone injuring themselves.

Differant times of year offer differant opportunities. Autumn offers possibly the best colours as leaves and plants turn yellow and fall to the ground. Of course life can't be too easy so whilst the colours are amazing the light in autumn is scarce and at 4pm its almost dark.

So having spoken to Julie and Dave back in April (see their pre wed shoot by clicking here), it was always going to be a rush to get the pictures at the church then race back to the magnificent Fennes estate to make use of their well tended grounds.

Donnas Family Portrait Session, New Orleans, French Quarter

I had the absolute pleasure of taking some more pictures in the French Quarter, New Orleans last weekend. This time it was a family session. The French quarter offers so many exciting areas to shoot and each turn down every street offers new opportunties.

One of the places we discovered was a small hotel which from the outside doesn't look much but once you are inside the gates a whole world of beauty and charector suddenly springs into life. Another fun session with lots of laughs and great fun.

Ashleys Senior Pictures in New Orleans

Last weekend we has great fun taking senior pictures in the down town New Orleans area with Ashley. It was a super fun session and whilst we photographed Ashleys mum circled around us in the car as a moving changing area for Ashley.

As you can see from the pictures we had a great time in and around the French Quarter which really is an amazing place for photographs to be taken. Every back alley and side-street offers new interesting opportunities.

London Blitz players celebrate their successful defence of their national title

This weekend saw the end of the British American football league season, the best teams in the respective divisions all headed for the nations capital to fight out for their respective national championships. The top of the bill saw the London Blitz take on the London Warriors* (not the South Wales Warriors who would later win the Div 2 championship).

The finals have moved around the country over the last 6 years, but having the finals in London this year certainly seems to have paid off. I've bee for the last five years and I believe the numbers for this year where at least double the norm.

To add to the drama Vernon Kay of TV fame (family fortunes, etc) played for the Warriors as safety. One of the funniest moments happened when Vernon was flagged for a late hit and the quick thinking commentator played the sound bit used on family fortunes for a wrong answer making the crowd roar with laughter.

The game finished 18-0 to the Blitz and was an excellent advert for the game for any neutral who made the effort. The Warriors never seemed to be able to get their offence moving and were punished by the hard hitting Blitz defence for every mistake.

Whilst Crystal Palace is no where near what a great stadium should be it was adequate and hopefully the powers in charge will keep the finals in London.

*The London Warriors were previously know as the London Cobras but after threatening legal action were allowed to take the name warriors, meaning there are now two warrior teams in the senior league.

Stixx Senior portraits, Baton Rouge, Denham Springs

Something that is common in America (so I'm learning) is for school leavers to have a selection of photographs taken as a reminder of a certain moment in time. These are known as senior pictures. This was all new to me but having discussed with Taylor (her friends call her Stixx) I was confident i could put my own twist onto what was expected.

We started out in the Louisiana State capital (Baton Rouge) and used a little coffee shop I'd stopped in when we came down for Mardi Gras at the start of the year. I remember thinking what a cool little place it would be for a shoot so when we decided on Baton Rouge I new where I wanted to start.

I also new where there was an old bank vault very close to the coffee shop that I had seen that was just screaming out to be used in a shoot. As you can see from the images on the blog and the video below we had some real fun.

The next location was next to the river where I'd scouted underneath a bridge which gave a really cool unusual overhead background. Close by there was some nice long grass and some logs all making excellent photography props and backgrounds.

We visited a few other places in Baton rouge but then unfortunately it began to rain. However we we decided that if we were going to get wet we might as well go for it so Stixx had fun splashing around in the water fountains outside the museum.

Because the rain had cut us short the day before we had arranged to meet up again the next day this time in old Denham Springs an areas rich with antiques and old styled shop fronts full of colour (British spelling) and excitement.

We were so lucky that Hollyn of the Pin-Up Parlour hairdressers allowed us to take some pictures in her shop and use it as a base so Stixx could get changed. We spent another three + hours finding fun places to shoot.

All in all an excellent fun couple of days!!

Family Portraits in New Jersey

I've been sitting on this slideshow for a while now. The photographs were actually taken back in February but were part of a gift for Jobeth and George. The whole family recently went on a cruise which where the pictures were shown publically for the first time so it's now safe for it to be added to the blog.

I had an incredible fun time meeting everybody and it's amazing how many points of interest are within just a short 45 minute drive ..... ;0)

Bay of St Louis Family Portrait Session, Louisiana

OK so it's kinda warm over here in Louisiana, especially if you used to the the English summers of grey skies and rain. So when the suns shining and it's hot where else would anyone rather be than on the beach.

I photographed young baby Presley when she was just 14 days old ( click here to see the newborn baby slideshow). Now she's grown a little it was time for a few more pics with mum + dad, grandparents and great grand parents.

Julie and Daves Pre Wedding Images, Braintree

Isn't it amazing how time flies? Six years ago I photographed Julies sisters wedding, 6 YEARS!! Was it really that long ago? It's always a fantastic pleasure to catch up with old clients and find out how their families are doing. This weekend I met up with Julie, Dave and Julies parents at their house in Braintree as we discussed their plans for their upcoming wedding.

As always I offer all my couples a free pre wedding shoot so I can see how they are infront of the lens and also as an excuse to have some fun. As you can see in the slideshow below we had a good laugh throughout the shoot. Such a fun couple and so easy to work with, I have a feeling their wedding will be spectacular!!

I'm in the Memory Preservation Business

I once heard a photographer describe what he did for a living. Instead of a long winded description of what he did he simply said "I'm in the memory preservation business". I can't think of a better way of describing what I do, and the importance was brought home to me again this week when I was asked by mother if I could rescue an old photograph of my Nan and Grandad (see above on the right of the image). Photograph restoration isn't my normal line of work but you can't work in this industry without learning your way around photoshop, so I think the above finished picture turned out ok. Although I'm torn if I should add a sepia tone just to age the image.

We are constantly reminded of the importance of memory protection after national disasters. Time after time we see distraught families returning to their destroyed homes and the one thing they bring out of the wreckage are their photographs. The 50 Inch TV and the Louis Vuitton hand bag are all replaceable, the photographs are not.

Photographs are one of our only links with the past and our own personal histories. Whatever you do make sure your memories are protected in the best way you can. One things for certain, you'll never have another chance to capture today.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Everyone gets into the New Orleans Mardi Gras spirit

There are several things that New Orleans is famous for but probably the top of the list has to be Mardi Gras. The origins stem back to the religious idea of giving up things for lent, traditionally prior to giving up things people would party (to make the best of it whilst they could) and gradually over time the mardi gras parades were formed. Very few people give up something for lent these days, but there's no reason the parties can't take place.

What I hadn't realised was that Mardi Gras takes place over a whole week and throughout the whole of Louisiana. Most towns have their own parades but it's in New Orleans that everyday massive parades thread through the streets with hundreds of thousands of people watching as and the people on the incredible floats throw beaded necklaces. Its really strange that it's almost impossible to attend a parade and not shout out for the beads, on the floor there are hundreds of the necklaces but the act of actually catching the beads is what it is all about.

Many of the locals bring along ladders to give them a height advantage, but in truth all they offer is a higher view, if the aim is catching beads that's easily achieved from the floor. All in all Mardi Gras is an incredible time and I feel sure it won't be the last time I experience it.

It takes exceptional ability and leadership to be promoted in the US Army to the rank of Colonel, so on the rare occasions it happens its something that is often celebrated by the officers friends and families.

I was honoured to be asked to photograph Stephanie's day and also to capture some family images which will be uploaded at a later date.

The day started with Stephanie preparing her uniforms and various family members visiting at her parents house.

The trip to where the party was to take place took a "New Jersey 45 minute drive" which I was to discover several times over the weekend could be anything between 30 minutes and an hour and a half. When we arrived there were plenty of people already there.

The actual military presentation of the rank was a short part of the day with a short reading. Stephanie's, dad then placed the Colonel badge of rank on her uniform and her mother, sister and brother added the rank to her dress uniform and cap.

With the formalities out of the way it was time for everyone to eat the excellent buffet meal that had been provided and carry on the conversations as Stephanie did the rounds and visited every table being an excellent host.

Rayna, Tyler and Hannah, Lifestyle Photographs Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Over the last few weeks i've had the real pleasure of getting to know the three little ones pictured above. We've played football (soccer) in the garden and struggled with homework in the evenings but every moment has been a joy.

New Born Baby Presley's Photo Shoot

Its always really special to be the first to photograph a newborn baby. Baby Presley here was just 14 days old when we took these pictures and her mum and dad were absolute stars throughout the whole shoot with a constant hand in rocking her between pictures, feeding burping etc.

Saints fan from birth

As is often the case young Presley was a little camera shy and it was over an hour before we got the first image. This is not unusual and is why i tell people booking me to photograph their newborn baby to allow between three and four hours.

Its the case in this area that everyone (and i mean everyone) loves their football and especially the New Orleans Saints, so we had a little fun dressing her up in Saints colours and giving her a football helmet to hold.

Sometimes I forget how lucky I am and how much I love to take photographs and as a result I've had some pretty incredible opportunities. I'm lucky enough to have travelled the world and photographed in some incredible locations.

The bridesmaids dresses in mardi gras colours

Last weekend was one of those incredible wedding days. Frank and Meagan had chosen to marry at the fantastic wedding venue "La Maison Creole" in New Orleans and I was honoured to be asked to capture their day.

New Orleans is famous for many things but probably top of the list are its infamous Mardi Gras parties.

Maegan and Frank's whole wedding theme was "Mardi Gras" based and incorporated the three mardi gras colours of gold purple and green which realy helped set of the photographs.

I also encountered a new tradition i'd never seen at a wedding before. It was based around the cake (check out Frank and Maegans incredible cake in the slide show above). The base of the cake has strings attached and the single ladies each take one. On the command they all pull and at the end of each string is a small pendant that signifies various things, I love discovering new ideas and traditions and this wedding was packed full of them.

There are so many happy highlights from the day but one of the most touching parts was when Maegans grandfather sang to her and her new husband, a very touching and heartfelt moment in time, not a dry eye in the house.

OK confession time. I haven't added anything to the blog for about a month and that's really bad. However in my defence I had a lot of work to get finished before I flew out to Louisiana to photograph Maegan and Franks wedding in New Orleans last Saturday (pics to follow soon). I've been busy since I landed a couple of weeks ago and have another six weeks work intermingled with fun before I have to return to the UK, It's times like this I realise I truly do have the best job in the world. But I fully intend on adding more stuff on here over the next few weeks.

Today I did something totally new. I had the honour of being asked to talk about my business and the way I work to various high school classes at the Central High School near Baton Rouge. This was a real treat and an honour for me. It's not unusual for me to be asked to talk to groups before but previously these have been businessman or other photographers so to talk to students at the start of the professional lives was a real treat and I hope they took away some ideas they can use in a positive way in their own chosen professions..

Not all (in fact very few) of the students had much of an interest in photography as a career choice so I aimed the majority of my talk to be general business ideas and centred the whole talks about two things. Being remarkable and the advantages it can bring and finally the ways of achieving excellence in the eyes of clients.

I always find when I teach I learn a few things myself, today they included, the English accent in America is a great advantage, the TV show Glee isn't a totally accurate view of real life in an American high school and teenagers throughout the world are pretty much the same, with the same worries, concerns and thoughts.

All in all a fascinating day and I must say a huge thank you to Miss Phenald and all her classes today for listening to my talk, and their interesting and often searching in-depth questions.

This Sunday I was honoured to be asked to photograph Harrison's Barmitzvah party at the Stock Brook country club near Billericay in Essex. I knew it was going to be a great party when I heard, the band was to be the excellent "mixed feelings", in my opinion one of the top party bands in the country and as you can see on their website here, highly sort after.

Despite the weather being extremely cold outside (we were later to receive our first snow of the winter) the party inside was in full swing, with some excellent speeches, and great music all being kept in smooth running order under the watchful eye of the excellent toastmaster Robert Persell.

Alexia and Pauls Pre wedding photographs, Colchester, Essex

This weekend I took the trip over to meet up with Alexia and Paul in Colchester who had recently got engaged and plan to marry in the summer of 2012. We had a great chat about their day and possible ideas that could happen.

We then took a short drive to Friday woods were we took a few photographs. We timed it pretty well as it was probably the only time over the weekend when it wasn't raining althought it was very muddy underfoot (which added to the fun).

I always try and do a pre wedding / engagement shoot for any couples that contact me when they're considering me as their photographer. If you know me or have read this blog over the last few years you'll know that my other passion is American football. I watch and photograph many British games all over the country. I've also travelled across to the states several times to watch games from high school, college and pro leagues (Geaux LSU, Geaux Saints).

Well this past weekend the NFL came to London for it's fourth year in a row, every year the tickets for Wembley stadium sell out regardless of which teams are chosen to play. Every year i've gone along and watched and loved every minute but this year was different. This year I would achieve an aim I'd long harboured as a pro photographer to photograph the game from the sidelines.

During the day on Saturday the NFL had hired out Trafalgar Square and set up a huge party for all the fans of the NFL. Luckily for me as a professional photographer i was allowed in the bear pit in the front of the stage giving excellent access for some great shots. During the day some incredible people and acts took to the stage including, Roger Goodell (NFL commissioner), Jerry Rice (hall of fame player), the Gold Rush cheerleaders, American rapper, Asher Roth, dance group Flawless, 49ers head coach, Mike Singletary and FHM's hottest woman on the planet Marrisa Millar (sometimes being a photographer can be real hard work).

So having spent an incredible day in the city centre it was time to head back to the Green man hotel where the evening festivities were due to start. The Great British Tailgate Party (GBTP) at the Green man started around 7pm with the hilarious and ever popular snail racing, much fun was had by all in attendance and many friendships were made / renewed.

All too soon Sunday had arrived and with it had come rain. Thoughts of the first NFL game in London came to mind when a newly laid Wembley pitch couldn't stand up to the heavy rain and hard pounding American football game rendering it a complete mess. Little did i kn ow at the time but as i was soon to find out the Wembley playing surface has been completely replaced with what they call a 3% synthetic mix. It's supposed to be that only 3% of the turf is artificial, I don't know the exact measurements but it looked more like the other way round. If you look at some of my pictures here on my facebook page, you'll notice that there's no mud or grass on the players and the only stains on their uniforms have come from the paint on the field. Let's just say if you were a cow on the field you'd very quickly starve to death.

So about two hours before kick off i head down to Wembley sign in and get my official NFL photographers vest with my unique number printed on the back. I later found out that the number is used to identify anyone breaking the rules so they can be asked to leave. I was escorted into the photographer office (which involved sharing a lift with Jerry rice) where two separate rooms of desks were filled with photographers from all over the world with their laptops plugged in sending their images to the worlds newsdesks.

The game kicks off and the crowd roars, I've never experienced anything like 80,000+ people screaming their appreciation at me from the top of their lungs (and perhaps some other stuff going on inside inside the stadium) but it felt good. All too soon the game came to a close, and I realised I hadn't been watching the game like i normally would do. I was so concentrating on shutter speeds, apertures, and getting the framing right the game had blurred. Having said that I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

At the very end of the game all the payers / coaches meet in the middle of the field to shake hands and wish each other luck, as a photogarpher this is a heaven sent opportunity not to be missed allowing close up access to the players not available during play.

My final shot is again proof that it's not all hard work working as a photographer, an image i'm gonna be dining out on for years to come. Well, when this many good looking ladies ask to have their photograph taken with me I just had to oblige ;0)

Family Lifestyle Portrait Session, Wivenhoe, Essex

About a week ago, I travelled over to the Essex college in Wivenhoe where I'd arranged to meet up with Steve, Heidi and young Joseph for a lifestyle portrait session.

It was a real fun afternoon and young Jospeh certainly kept us all on our toes all day, he's got the cutest smile ever and is full of energy. However he didn't quite get the idea that the bread he was given was supposed to be for the ducks, prefering to eat it himself instead.

Naomi and James Wedding, Elmstead Market, Colchester

One thing about being a wedding photographer in Essex is every location is different. Unlike when working in London there is often large rural areas that if the weather is kind and with a little bit of effort can help in creating some real memorable images.

Naomi and James got married at a small little church near Naomi's parents house in Elmstead market where Naomi and her bridesmaids got ready. The whole day went without a hitch and was very enjoyable for everyone who came.

One of my favourite detail shots was this one of Naomis shoes on the piano, I was later told by Naomi that his piano had been a gift to her Grandfather and Grand mother on their wedding day which helps to make the image even more special.

BritBowl 2010

If you've followed this blog for a while you'll know in my free time I like to watch American football. Well this weekend was the culmination of the years efforts and the best teams in the country gathered at the sixways stadium in Worcester for their respective finals.

The finals stretched over the whole weekend and covered flag and full contact from cadet (7 and up) through junior, youth and senior. I must say it was a joy to see the youngsters playing flag American football in the stadium, the look on their faces showed what it meant to them.

The big game was of course the senior leagues kitted final which was played on the Saturday evening between the Coventry Jets and the London Blitz. The final was a lot closer than many had thought it would be with some incredible plays on both sides of the ball throughout the game. The final result was London Blitz 34 - Coventry Jets 20. Unfortunately due to me having arranged to meet someone on the Sunday (who didn't turn up) I couldn't stay for the second days events but I'm sure it ran as smoothly as the first day. All in all an excellent weekend of American football.

Hannah and Dylans Wedding in Peldon, Colchester

I've just got back from showing Hannah and Dylans their images from their fantastic wedding. I first met Hannah and Dylan back in March when we talked about their day then took a few pictures (link to their pre wed shoot) .

Having had such fun on that day I had no doubt their wedding day would be a real fun event and it certainly was. The church (St. Mary the Virgin) was just a few minutes away from Hannah's parents house (where the party was to be held), so the pressure of getting lost was non existent taking away something that can be a major stress, I did raise a smile when I mentioned to a nervous Dylan at the alter that the girls were going to be late cause the sat nav had gone wrong.

The ceremony was ministered by Dylans uncle so it really was a tight family service. After a few pictures at the church it was time to head back to the marquee set up in the garden.

The evening couldn't have been any better with some fantastic food, top notch speeches and a band that really rocked the house (well marquee). A truely magical day and an honour to have photographed.

Family Portrait Shoot in the Park, Braintree, Essex

Last Saturday we saw the first serious rain we've had in quite some time. Whilst no doubt the countries gardeners and farmers were relieved I must admit it wasn't good news to me. My problem was I was due to meet up with a couple of families in the local park on Sunday and whilst photography in the rain can produce some interesting images it's far easier to have fun when the suns shining.

Luckily mother nature was kind and Sunday saw a welcome return of the sun. In no time at all we were all having fun and running around, jumping and shouting (I'm just a big kid really). It's not rocket science, if you want good images of children, just have fun and it all comes natural.

New Born Baby Masons first Photography Shoot, Southend on Sea

I'm extremely proud how past clients quickly become friends and It was a fantastic honour to travel down to Southend on sea and revisit, Taylor and Nateisha who's wedding I had the pleasure of photographing last year. This time there was a new star of the show, their beautiful new born baby boy, Mason.

Little Mason was an absolute star and slept through most of the shoot only occasionally waking up to check out what was going on around him.

Mason is just over four weeks old, If you've seen my baby pictures before you'll know I consider the early stages the perfect time for capturing the best baby images (ideally in the first two weeks). If you have a baby please don't delay in making enquiries, babies change so quickly and you'll never have an opportunity to get these pictures again.

Family Portrait Photography in Essex

This weekend I travelled the short distance to Felsted where I had been commissioned to photograph a family grouping. I love this sort of shoot as very often the varoius family members haven't seen each other for a while. This was very much the case as one part of the family had travelled over from Arizona, a perfect chance to capture the family together all at one time, as well as some individual images.

As you can see in the top image here, we had one member of the family (the pet dog Charlie) who was certainly intent on being the star of the show. Every group shot he would come and check out what was going on just to make sure everything was in order.

It's funny because at the free portrait training day I ran recently one of the things I covered was how to make someone in a group the centre of attention. I have to admit, it's not something I've done with animals before but the basics remain the same, something that I have a feeling I'll be doing again. Sunday turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year the shoot took a little over an hour and I'm very pleased with the end result. You can see a few of the images in a slideshow below. Goldilocks and the Four Wedding Photographers

I was chatting to a fellow pro photographer the other day and we got around to discussing the natural progression photographers follow. As everything there are those that these general guidelines don't apply to (and if you take photographs you're probably convinced you're one of them) but I'll hold my hand up and admit, I've been through all of these stages including the horrible overphotoshop one, eughhh!

Anyway I thought a good way to explain the different levels would be tell you the story of Goldilocks and the four wedding photographers, so if you're sitting comfortably, i'll begin.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess called Goldilocks who had met and fallen in love with her very own prince charming. In no time at all they had realised they were meant to be together and begun arranging their wedding day. Now the prince was a very busy man and being male had left all the important details to be arranged by his beloved Goldilocks which she had done in a very short period of time. All that remained to be done was to find the right type of photographer that could capture her day in the way she wanted to remember it. So she drafted a letter to go to all the kingdom stating she wished to see all the kingdoms photographers.

On the first day she saw the talented amateur photographer who showed her his work and whilst it seemed adequate it lacked the overall wow factor Goldilocks was looking for. She couldn't quite put her finger on it but the images although well exposed and posed seemed to lack the pozaz she was looking for. So she thanked the talented amateur photographer and sent him on his way.

On the second day young Goldilocks interviewed the "I'm not confident enough so i turn everything black and white specialist". Now the images he showed were striking but as Goldilocks soon found out after seeing page after page of black and white images they all seemed rather ... well dull. Goldilocks new she liked Black and White but had discovered that too much of one thing just doesn't work.

So now on the third day Goldilocks interviewed the third photographer who was strangely named "look how clever I am in photoshop.com". Again this photographer had an impressive catalogue of images all of which looked stunning in their own way. However what Goldilocks soon realised was that whilst it was groovy to have a modern style image looking like something straight out of a Doctor Who poster when it came to wedding images in an album it just looked a mess. Much more than five minutes of looking at them left her feeling like her eyes wanted to bleed. She thanked the photographer and sent him on his way.

On the fourth day she interviewed the "Just right photographer". He showed and explained that with a good image and the right type of touching up in photoshop you should be able to make a good image great, without causing distress to the viewer. Goldilocks looked through his images and realised in an instant that this was exactly what she had been looking for, not too little black and whites and not too much over saturation and photoshop magic.

The images looked alive without being over powering so she booked the photographer.

A long time after the wedding when she sat with her grandchildren looking through the record of her wedding (her album) she would often look back and be happy that she had taken the time to look at the different levels of photographers in her Kingdom. As Goldilocks looked through the lasting record of her magical day she thought about her beloved prince charming and thanked the fact he had left the choice of photographer up to her so she could be happy ever after ......... the end.

I was going to put a bit in about a wicked step uncle who had a nice camera and had said they would photograph the wedding for free (always a recipe for disaster), but I prefer my tales to finish with a happy ending rather than tears.

It's also worth mentioning that the couple in the images above are in fact Gemma and Paul who I had the honour of photographing recently. Whilst their wonderfull day was it's own fairytale the above story is completely made up and the images are used only as a visual explanation.

Photographers are not terrorists!

Once again the humble photographer has been branded as a nuisance as he tries to take pictures. Is it just me or do the Police use the "Prevention of Terrorism" law to enforce the "we don't like what you're doing so stop it" law. For example who can forget the 82 year old gentleman ejected from the Labour conference for objecting about the Iraq war, he was arrested under the (guess what) Prevention of Terrorism act (you must see the video here).

I love the way the photographer in question, Jules Mattsson, kept his cool and forced the police who were trying to stop him taking photographs to back track, when they realised that they had no right to ask him to stop. The urban myth of you have to have permission from their parents was used and he correctly told them that was not true (If it was the many city CCTV operators would have to ask the parents of any child in the town centres to sign forms).

The photographer, Jules Mattsson, in the video is currently taking legal advise and will probably sue the police for stopping him carrying out his job (freelance photographer). Photographers must really start pointing out to the Police that taking photographs of people in a public place is not illegal and no permission has to be sort. New Born Baby Photography in Essex

At the weekend I took the trip from Essex up to Nottingham where a brand new baby was awaiting her first photo shoot. Nick, (my web designer at two little fishes) and his wife Tamsin proudly showed off their beautiful new baby girl and were joined by her proud grandparents.

There's something so special about photographing new born babies, it's such a precious time for everyone involved, everything is new and exciting. The trick to great baby photographs is to photograph them as soon as possible, personally I believe the first two weeks are the golden time, of course each baby is different but, if you call me when you leave the hospital, i'll meet you at your house (it's that important).

Young Charlotte here was as good as gold and we got some real special images as you can see in the slideshow above, she even got in the world cup fever and cheered on England in her own cute way. She'll never be this age again but there'll always be the photographs as a reminder of this very special time. Many thanks to her loving mum, dad, nanny, grandad and of course to Charlotte herself for being such stunning models making the whole shoot so easy.

i-Phone problems

Recently my i-phone has started picking up a few problems when i've been running. After some research i've found the solution (touch wood) and thought i'd post a blog entry so others who may have a similar problem can solve it.

The problem is when running all of a sudden the voice control cuts in which automatically cuts off anything you happen to be listening to and really annoying in my case, stops the map my run app from working. It would appear that it's likely to be caused by sweat getting into the built in microphone in the cable. This probably explains why up until recently (when we've started getting alot warmer) this hasn't been a problem.

luckily after googling the fault I came across this link, where apple acknowledges the problem and offers a replacement set of earpieces free ... i've just applied for mine so i'll see when the new set turn up if it solves the issue.

***UPDATE***

So I received my new earphones from Apple very quickly (couple of days) and for about a week they were great. Unfortunately exactly the same problem re-emerged soon after (about 5 runs later). So I contacted Apple again and again they sent me another headset replacement. However since then I went to the local pound shop and bought a set of ear phones (without a microphone) that I now use for running and keep the official apple headphones for non running use, airplanes, walking etc.

So although apple did well in their attempts to fix the problem by a speedy replacement scheme the earphones are simply not made for people who go runnning. My advice, go to the pound shop and get a cheap earphone set but be aware you won't be able to answer calls with them.

Gemma and Pauls Wedding Blessing, Canvey Island

This weekend was the hottest that the UK has seen for quite some time, and when the weathers good there's only one place anyone should be, the beach!

Having said that, there was the wedding blessing of Gemma and Paul that needed photographing but having photographed them earlier in the year on their free pre wed shoot I had an idea they were a fun couple that might be up for anything. The photography test drive had been in snow and the wedding blessing was in extreme heat so there really couldn't have been anything more different! The day started at Paul's parents house where everyone was getting ready, as Paul and Gemma had married the week earlier in St. Lucia it was a very relaxed and fun environment with everyone mucking in with the preparation.

Having enjoyed the wedding blessing ceremony all the guests headed to a friends nearbye house where a marquee had been erected whilst, Paul, Gemma and I headed out to the beach. When we arrived the tide was on it's way in meaning we had to work super fast in the small area of sand we had left.

I must say Paul and Gemma were fantastic to work with and in some cases brave. I find if the Bride and groom are willing to go with it and be brave it opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities when it comes to composition. I even found enough of an excuse to go for a paddle whilst taking the pics and I was very tempted to go the whole hog and dive straight in, the water was so cooling.

It's a common mistake that people think bright sunshine is good and makes best wedding photography conditions. In fact the complete opposite is true and harsh bright sunshine can cause all sorts of problems.

However a little bit of tactical positioning and knowledge meant we could use the sun to our advantage and capture some fun and dynamic shots.

All in all a fantastic day spent with lovely people.

Being a Granulocyte Donor

So about a week ago a friend on facebook sent out an urgent message that someone who's son was seriously ill desperately needed donors from blood group A pos to give blood. I new this was my blood group (being an ex-soldier) and rang the number on the message to see if I could assist in some way. What followed was a short conversation with the young lads (Billy) mother who explained they were desperate for people who could give up some time and travel to Londons Kings College Hospital.

I think at this stage I should say that I am no way a medical expert and my writings here are only my laymans terms understandings of what is happening and why, if anyone reading this need further information or has medical queries please seek advice from an expert.

Here's an explanation written by Billy's mother on the "Get well soon Billy" facebook page explaining his condition,

"on the 25th of January Billy was admitted to T12 NORTH at UCLH ... This is a teenage cancer trust ward and although billy does not have cancer he has a life threatening illness... The illness is called APLASTIC ANEMIA which he has severe... Aplastic anemia is a condition where bonemarrow does not produce sufficient new cells to replemish blood cells.. patients with it have lower counts in all 3 blood cells .. white, red and platelets.. BILLY HAS IT VERY SEVERE... he has had a course of ATG which we will find out soon if it has helped.. but in the mean time they are looking internationally for a bonemarrow donor and possibly another course of ATG.... he will need antibiotics, platelets transfusions and blood transfusions very often"

I haven't met young Billy yet, he's not really up for strange visitors, but an exception was made when JLS visited the hospital (see image below captured by the sun newspaper) although Billys dad told me when the new prime minister, David Cameron, visited Billy decided he wasn't of enough importance and as such didn't grant him an audience, lol.

So Billys mum passed on my details to the hospital and within an hour they had phoned and asked me to travel to London for a blood test the next day. I travelled up at the appointed time (well I got a bit lost and was a little late) but they took the samples they needed and sent me on my way. I have to be honest I didn't really know what I was getting myself into at this stage and I'm guessing there'll be a few people out there searching the web in the same boat which is part of the reason why I'm writing this blog post, to explain my point of view and perhaps answer some questions people may have.

The next morning I received another call from the hospital telling me I was in fact a match (I told them that, but I understand they had to confirm it) and could I come along tomorrow for more tests.

So the next morning I found myself on the train again travelling back into London. This time I had to go to Kings College Hospital at the Apheresis Unit, I arrived at the same time as two other people who I was later to find out were Billy's dad and one of his sisters who were there for the same reason I was. The staff in the Apheresis unit are excellent, they talked through what the procedure would be and how it would all happen. The basics are the blood would be taken from one arm and put into a machine that separates it into the various make up and they then extract the white blood cells (granulocytes) that fight infection. The rest of the blood is then mixed up again and put back into the body via the other arm. Having had all this explained it was a case of more blood being taken for screening (Hep B/C, HIV, HTLV, CMV, Syphilis etc) and a thorough medical including an ECG and blood pressure check. The final thing was a private interview with a doctor who explained the procedure again and gave me the opportunity to ask any questions I may have. It was explained that as long as everything was OK I would be given tablets to take and an injection to have the day before I was due to come in so my body would increase the amount of white blood cells it was producing.

Tuesday came and I got the call that I was needed on Wednesday and I should take the tablets and the injection. Here's where I'm lucky in that my parents are both nurses so there was no hassle finding someone to administer the injection, although to be honest its something I could have done myself if needed. I hardly felt them at all (I had 2 because I'm a big guy) and I can honestly say it's nothing to worry about.

That evening I had some of the side effects they had warned me that were likely and they included a feeling in my lower back as if someone had put in a bicycle pump and given it a couple of pumps (that's how I can best describe it anyway) it wasn't at all painful but I was aware that it was different. Apparently its caused by the bones working overtime creating all the extra white blood cells that were to be harvested the next day. The other side effect I had was not being able to sleep, as the tablets were doing their thing. To be honest neither were a major problem and as I write this blog entry 24 hours after taking them most of the effects have completely worn off.

So today was the day when the whole thing finally came together and my white blood cells would be harvested by the apheresis machine. In no time (after more blood tests, blood pressure tests, temperature etc) I was made comfortable and a cannula (plastic needle) placed in each arm and connected to the various pipes. The machine is switched on and for the next couple of hours I listened to my i-phone and read the newspaper. I had hoped that I would be able to operate my laptop but it soon became obvious that wasn't going to be possible as the way the needle was in my right arm meant I couldn't really move it. It's probably also worth mentioning that whilst a newspaper is just about doable I think I would have struggled to read a book because of the inability to do it one handed.

The process took around two hours and 15 minutes before I was finished on the machine a driver was waiting to whisk it away so they could give it to Billy immediately, which kind of impressed upon me how much it must have been needed. After having been unplugged from the machine I was given another check over (more blood for tests, blood pressure and swabs) and a cup of tea. I'm not sure when I'll be needed again but the likelihood is Monday I'm informed I can only do this a maximum of three times and everyone is hoping Billy's bone marrow operation is a success and he'll be able to start making his own white blood cells again.

Heroes and Zeroes

Heroes first, obviously Billy, I can't imagine how depressing it must be for a young guy (14) to be stuck in hospital feeling rough with continual blood tests and transfusions being given. Keep smiling mate it won't be long before you're watching your beloved West Ham again.

Billy parents and family, for their continued support and love for the guy in trying circumstances.

It's long been a bit of a thing with me that there are many people who want to improve their photography and I want to help in any way I can. Too many photographers shun others trying to learn as if by sharing their knowledge and experience will somehow take it away from them. I love my job and want others to share in the passion so a few months ago I decided to organise a one day portrait training course in Essex. I was also very keen to keep the costs to anyone wishing to attend to an absolute minimum and I'm proud to say it was completely free.

I was really pleased that a merry bunch of photographers began to arrive from all corners of the UK. Some had travelled many miles others from just around the corner but all came with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to learn. There's something really special when a group of people gather who've never met each other but have a common theme that bonds the group. The enthusiasm builds and in no time at all it's like they've been life long friends.

Confessions of a Wedding Photographer

Once upon a time in a land far far away (well not too far) a wedding photographer was deep in preparation for the days wedding. He had prepared everything in advance the evening before, the batteries were charged the spare camera ready and the tripods packed. Everything was in the car and the satellite navigation was set. But something seemed wrong, he had that nagging feeling in the back of his mind. The one that says you've forgotten something, he checked and rechecked the equipment and then decided whatever it was couldn't be that important. As long as the cameras, flash guns and memory cards were all there anything else could be done without ....

So after a reasonably short drive the wedding photographer arrives at the brides house in plenty of time to capture the bride at home getting ready. The sky had turned a little darker and it was starting to look like rain may be a possibility. The photographer automatically started to check out the garden for a clean and dry area for the bride to stand for some outside shots. It was at this stage he noticed his choice of footwear and a feeling of horror set in. Instead of the highly polished black brogues (polished the evening before) on the end of his feet were a pair of blue fluffy house slippers.

To the photographer he felt like he had bright red flashing neon lights on his feet but Incredibly everyone at the house was so caught up in their own preparations no-one noticed. The shoot went well and he managed to leave early gaining a vital 20 minutes before he was due to meet the groomsmen. What followed was a mad dash to the nearest shoe shop and the quickest purchase of shoes known to man kind.

All in all disaster avoided, but a word of warning, breaking in new shoes at a wedding is best avoided.

Black Rapid Camera Strap

About a year ago I first discovered the Black Rapid camera strap, it is one gadget that has undoubtedly made the way I work easier. I liked it so much I recently acquired another one. Every time I use it other photographers ask me about it and where they can lay their hands on one, so I thought I'd do a short video review explaining my thoughts.

When I bought my original strap I had to import it from the States (where they are manufactured) which unfortunately for me attracted a hefty import charge that I wasn't expecting when it arrived in the post. Happily a UK supplier (Crooked Imaging www.crookedimaging.co.uk ) has now taken up the mantle and is now solving this issue for UK based photographers and has some in stock.

The shots you never see

So last Sunday saw the opening weekend for the British American football league which has recently been renamed British American Football Association Community League (BAFACL). As always whenever I get chance I travel with the Colchester Gladiators to cover the games.

it's inevitable when going through post production there's always those shots that never see the light of day, the ones that nobody (except me) ever sees. Above is one of those shot's, I'd been tracking the player running with the ball towards the endzone and just as he approached the score line and a crunch tackle was about happen I panned straight into the goal post and captured the above image. Oooops!

Over the years I've got hundreds of shots like this, maybe the ref sticks his arm up straight across the lens or a player runs in front and causes the autofocus to be confused. At the end of the day it just comes down to trying to be in the right place at the right time and luck.

What Camera Should I Buy?

It's probably the most asked question I get at weddings, in e-mails or texts from friends. It's never an easy answer to give but I thought I'd put my thoughts up here and hopefully it may give some kind of answer. As you can see from the above image (taken on my i-phone) I have this really bad habit of keeping hold of my cameras. I can't seem to allow myself to part with them, each body has it's own memories and when I look at them I'm reminded of special images that they have caught over the years. I just can't let any of them go.

As far as I (and most pro's) are concerned there are only two manufacturers anyone should look at, those being Nikon and Canon. Now before anyone gets upset and starts reading the small print about mega-pixels and the amount of widget bumps any of the other manufacturers offer let me explain my thinking. Nikon and canon have been the market leaders for longer than most can remember, a direct result of that is that they have the most users. Because they have the most users there is more equipment available both brand new and most importantly used. Take a look in any camera shop and see how much equipment the shop carries for Nikon and canon, then look for another manufacturer, Sony, Olympus, Penatx etc. As the famous saying goes, "buy right or buy twice".

So having narrowed it down to the two manufacturers (and if you're cool you'll pick Nikon) you now need to think about what the main use of your camera is likely to be and what your budget is. As I only use Nikon and have a small knowledge of their product range that's the manufacturer I'm going to suggest.

Film Camera (college / Purist) Nikon FM2 - something special about this camera, no widgets at all and completely manual, if you want to learn the basics this is a great camera to start with. A true purists camera.

Basic Digital (occasional use) Nikon D 3000 - A great little camera that won't break the budget and has a really cool in built help to help new users to understand more about using digital SLR's.

Medium use (semi pro) Nikon D 90- I liked this camera so much I bought one! Truth is as a pro photographer I wanted a great camera that I could carry to normal social type events without the weight and size of the pro bodies. Added to that the HD video capture and incredible (and I mean INCREDIBLE) ability of this camera in low light, it has the same sensor as the next body up at almost half the price and has certainly earned its worth with me.

Once you step above the £1,000 mark you really are into a specialised market where each camera is geared towards individual markets (sport, portraiture, studio) and let's face it if you're spending that kind of money you're unlikely to need my advise.

Whatever your choice there's one thing you need to know. It doesn't matter how much money you spend or what equipment you have, cameras don't take great images, photographers do ( a lesson I learnt after using my first ever Hasselblad and seeing the results). I was doing a bit of back reading on my blog the other day and I realised it's been a while since I've run one of my lifestyle portrait training days. I love holding these days and to me one of the best parts has always been seeing the theory put into practise by the people who came. However there's always been a drawback in that previously I've charged for this service which I realise has restricted some peoples abilities to attend. This saddens me as I've always loved sharing my techniques and encouraging others to go for it when taking pictures.

However things have changed! I'm super excited to write about this today on my blog as I've just finished putting the final pieces together that makes it possible to hold this event at no charge. Run Phot-Boy Run

So about a year ago I took a look at myself and didn't like too much of what I saw. Too many hours in front of a computer after having a physical life previously had taken its toll. So I set out to do something about it. With a new pair of trainers I set about a regular running routine of 5 runs a week (taking weekends off). When I first started it was a little over 3 miles (walk run ... mostly walking if I'm honest). I'm now up to 7.5 miles a day and it's taking the same amount of time!

Over the weeks/ months the pace has got faster the distance further and the weight less. There's been highs and lows which have included weight loss, weight gain, injuries and bad weather but every day (barring injury) the miles have been clocking up till I reached a significant goal yesterday.

Yesterday I passed the 1,000 mile mark since I started using the map my run website. This website has been even easier to use since i got my i-phone and downloaded their free app. Without going into a total love fest what it does is track your route and time then uploads it to the website so you have a permanent record over the weeks/months/years of your achievements. It also gives you in run information i.e how many miles you've covered how long you've run for etc all whilst listening to your music, or if you're like me whatever book you're into.

But the best thing is I haven't changed my diet at all. I still treat myself occasionally to fish and chips and my fair amount of Guinness.

I'm still a long way from where I want/need to be but the miles are clocking up. Seriously thinking about a half marathon this year and who knows maybe next year .......

Camera Settings For Photographing Wildlife

Occasionally I like to try something different in my photography so when recently I read through my Nikon camera manual and noticed the wildlife settings I decided to head to a local park and see what results I could get. I always read the manuals of my cameras from cover to cover as there's always new ways of doing things added regularly.

I had some success using the manufacturers wildlife settings and the adjusted noise of the shutter (see the video) works surprisingly well. I strongly suggest you dig out your manuals and see what secrets the camera holds. Have fun!

Tony and Donnas Wedding, The Old Hall Hotel, Buxton, Derbyshire

Congratulations to Tony and Donna on their fantastic wedding that was held at the Old Hall Hotel in Buxton, Derbyshire. I'm led to believe that the hotel is in fact the oldest in England and has had many guests of note in the past including royalty.

The day was made even more special by four of the cutest bridesmaids on the planet who never complained, and had so much fun (even when it was cold outside).

An eye for details

I don't think it's an accident that the majority of photographers I know have an eye for details.

It's like a sixth sense where we can spot things out of the ordinary, things that may make or break an image. For some reason today whilst I was in town I was drawn to the local petshop window, I don't even have a pet but the old sixth sense or spidy sense kicked in. Any way long story short this is the poster that I saw ..... I wonder how many others didn't see it.

But in all seriousness I guess it's a knack built out of the desire to not spend hours in photoshop removing crisp packets or people from backgrounds. It's so much easier to ask people to move than to try and photoshop them out of an image .... or it used to be, I saw a sneak peak of the next photoshop thats due in April today and that looks a mighty powerful tool. I'm guessing that's an upgrade I may not need too much talking into buying.

Recently I was chatting to a soon to be bride, during our conversation we got onto the subject of the first dance. The problem she was having was in finding the right music that both her and her fiancée could agree on. Jacobs Barmitzvah and Party at Dyram Park Country Club

A few weeks back I had the honour of recording young Jacobs Barmitvah, well at least the practise run anyway. The actual ceremony takes place on the Jewish Sabbath (Saturday) and as it is a day of rest and a religious ceremony no-one is allowed to work.

Jacob had learnt his Hebrew well and read through his readings with very little trouble, overwatched by his father and grandfather. I hear the actual ceremony (a few weeks later) went completely without a hitch making his whole family extremely proud.

Of course having successfully been bartmitzvahed there is only one thing to do and that's have a massive party so friends and family can join in the celebration. The chosen venue for the party was Dyram Park Country Club, all in all a very nice venue and with very easy access just of the A1 (a photographers dream).

I absolutely love learning of other traditions and religions. I feel the more you learn the less there is to fear. I have always found with any Jewish work I do whether it's weddings or Barmitzvahs the parties are always legendary and great fun!

Congratulations Jacob, I hope you had as much fun as I did in capturing it!

Hannah and Dylans pre Wedding Photographs

This weekend I headed over to Peldon near Colchester where I was due to meet up with Hannah and Dylan at Hanna's parents house. it was great to meet up after we had spoken a few times on the phone and could finally put a face to a name. We sat and discussed their plans for the day then set off to capture some images.

Focus On Imaging 2010

Another year and it was time to take the long trip to the midlands to check out what was hot (and what was not) for the world of photography for the next twelve months. For those that have never been, Focus on Imaging is held at the NEC and is the largest annual imaging show in Europe.

It carries knowledge and equipment from the initial capture through to editing and output. Whilst many of the same old faces were there I always try and seek out the smaller individual companies. It's these small companies that sometimes have new ideas and products that I crave over.

So what was new? In truth not a lot, a few little ideas here and there. When I first started visiting Focus there were several large stands all selling dark room equipment with huge enlargers and chemicals a plenty. I honestly don't think there were any at all this year. A sign of the times but at the same time a little sad.

However the one thing that will never change and always raises a smile are the hobby photographers that insist on having as many camera bodies strung around their throat as they can possibly carry. Not only that but they have as many extras bolted to the bodies as they can afford, and are normally dressed in enough webbing straps that they wouldn't look out of place at the start of an Army assault course. I've yet to see a herd of wilder beast come streaming through the NEC weaving between the stalls but rest assured should this happen the hobby guys will be there to get the shot, they'll probably miss it mind you but at least they'll look the part (or they think they will).

If you haven't gathered It is considered by most pros as highly uncool to be seen with a camera at the show (hence the photographs taken on my phone). I don't go to photograph anything, I go to enquire and try new equipment and talk to suppliers.

Another thing that struck me is the amount of photoshop lectures going on, all very interesting but I kind of got the idea many of the instructors were there to show how good they were (or the software they were selling). I remember hearing one guy rip into a photographer because he shot in jpg rather than raw, he went on a long explanation of how raw is so much better because it can capture more levels of light and help to recover blown highlights, the guy simply said why have the highlights been blown? Again the instructor went into the explanation that not every shot is perfect and raw files could recover more than jpg, to which the guys answer was, why not shoot film then? The instructor gave up ...lol. moral of the story is do what you like and if you're happy with the results don't worry what the pipe smoking men with beards say.

In all it was a good show and I bumped into a few old friends including Catherine Connor (see pic) from Contemporary Photographic Training. Catherine is the engine behind the famous Annabel Williams training course in the peak district and has helped launch many photography businesses throughout the UK (including mine). They run some really excellent courses up there and it's been a little too long since i've been on a visit. Perhaps, i'll check out what seminars they are running this year.

Of course focus saw me leaving with another Nikon camera body and a hole in my pocket .... let's hope this weekend shoot goes well to pay for some of it.

You get what you pay for

I have to say some of the judges comments are just wrong. A good photographer would be able to get a good image regardless of what camera they are using and how much it costs. I mean does anyone believe all Ferrari owners are good drivers?

So if you can't judge a book by it's cover what should a couple do? Well in most cases it's a case of asking friends who they would recommend. The problem with that is of course they only had the experience of one photographer on their day so what makes them the expert?

The answer for me is a test drive. Any bride who calls me (e-mail etc) will know the very first thing I do is offer a free pre wed shoot, no strings attached. Once they've seen the pictures then we can they will know exactly what they will be getting for their day.

If they're happy with the pictures we can then move on with arranging their day. Peace of mind for all involved. I really love my job and I want to remove as many worries from the couple prior to the day as possible .... haven't they got enough to worry about?

Don't believe me .... call my bluff 01376 567 995, It'll be one less thing to keep you awake at night. Of course if you live more than an hours drive from me travel costs will apply.

This Sunday was one of the snowiest days I've ever seen in England, I honestly don't remember snow like this for this long so early in the year. Being an Essex wedding photographer the weather is not normally this exciting so I was really pleased to be shooting in a different environment.

I travelled down to meet Gemma and Paul who had contacted me recently after being recommended from one of last years weddings. Gemma and Paul are planning to get married in St Lucia this year and will have a wedding blessing in the UK on their return. Portrait Photography Session in Stony Stratford

I love the way that my style of photography doesn't keep me chained to a studio meaning I can jump in my car and travel to my clients allowing me to capture them in their natural environment.

I really enjoyed meeting Julie and over coffee we chatted and Julie showed me a collection of family photographs and filled me in on parts of her history.

There were so many treasured memories wrapped up in photographs giving a permanent reminder to moments in time, docmenting children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The shoot happened to coincide with a very heavy snowfall the night before. As a result we decided the best approach would be to work inside (where it's warm) and only ventured into the garden for a few pictures.

Luckily for my journey home the roads were all clear and the journey which was supposed to take two hours (according to google) actually took two hours. I think many people had decided to stay at home which made traffic light, i guess they just don't love their jobs like me .....

A Christmas visit

Christmas is all about the kids and I'm lucky enough to have two great young god children who their Dad was kind enough to bring round the other day. You could literally see the pleasure in their eyes as the day gets nearer, purely magical.

Whilst they were here they decorated some special Christmas Biscuits two of which now have pride of place on the Christmas tree. Take a look at this short video showing some of the fun we had. We also ventured outside for a while but the snow meant we didn't stay out too long.

On another thought I've just about finished driving around delivering various photography type gifts ordered by my clients. It's amusing meeting in lay-byes, distant pubs and work locations as couples try and keep their gift ideas secret from each other. This year I had the fun of meeting a husband in one location and his wife in another location (an hour later), neither of them new about the others idea and I was sworn to secrecy by both of them. I guess it shows they both loved the pictures we took earlier in the year.

i Phone 3GS Life Changer

A few days ago my blackberry decided the little ball used to navigate around the menus would no longer work. This caused me problems and rendered my phone unable to carry out anything but making and receiving calls. 3 years ago that would have been all I would have wanted but having been spoiled with instant access to e-mails, and my diary plus a limited web access (about as good as dial up) all of a sudden it was like I'd lost an arm.

So a phone call to my supplier shows that I'm due for a free upgrade. I'd heard the hype of the new i-phone and had a play on one in America last year which I must say impressed me so when it was offered I took it up.

What makes this so much better than anything else I'm aware of is its ability (much like a PC) to download software and personalise it. For example one of my favourite apps i've discovered is imapmyrun. The basics are you press start when you run the phone then logs your route using its built in GPS you press stop when you finish. The i-phone shows you your route tells you how far and fast you've gone and adds any hills etc to its calculations. Not happy with that it then uploads the information to a website (if you choose) where you can track your training efforts over the months. The cost for this .... zero, the app and web site is all free, of course you can upgrade if you wish but if your happy with the basic package (like me) it's fantastic.

Another great trick is it's ability to connect to the net either via 3g or if you're in a wireless network area you get the full broadband effect. Watching TV live (including sky sports) or the various catch up videos all on your phone. Not to mention listening to any radio station in the world (handy if you want to know American Football scores and you live in England).

There are thousands of apps available that suit any hobbies (bird watching, football scores, learn languages etc) and many of them are free. Whilst on my run I tend to listen to books I would like to read but haven't been able to find the time previously, currently I'm listening to this one, which surprise surprise is also free.

Has the i-phone changed my life for the better? Very much so, now all I need is for people to advise me on some of the best apps, don't be shy.

Camera Repairs

Is there anything more annoying in life than an intermittent fault? You know the sort of thing, like the car that only starts when it feels like it but behaves perfectly every time it's taken anywhere near a garage.

On the wedding last weekend one of my flashes decided to work to rule. I'm sure anyone who takes pictures will realise that the timing of an image is a vital aspect when capturing real moments in time. The last thing a photographer needs is that nagging thought of, is the camera going to fire when I push the button. Of course I try and plan for every eventuality and is one of the reasons I carry so much equipment on a wedding. My car is heavily loaded with up to 5 cameras and three separate flashes, not including spare tripods and studio lighting etc. The majority of the equipment never sees the light of day and stays securely in the boot but the thought of it being there just makes the nerves settle that much easier.

So having successfully substituted the faulty kit and finished the job it was time to inspect the camera and flash for anything obvious. It became apparent that a trip to the repair shop was in order. A trip into Central London (Oh Joy) to Fixation and quick chat with the repair team sees me leaving my camera/flash with them to investigate and report. Fixation are authorised Nikon and Canon (apparently some people use Canon) repairers and also have a thriving hire and sales section. It's interesting to spend half an hour or so just looking at the various equipment they have on display. I must admit I was very tempted by the roller style camera bags, perfect for those long haul flights and a really cool solar panel for running a laptop ... hmmmm.

A couple of days later a phonecall tells me the camera is ready, the culprit being the hotshoe, I had guessed this to be the case and was pleased when my theory was confirmed. I had feared a chase the fault exercise, where everything that can be replaced is replaced in an effort to find a fault (I used to work in the motor trade). I've tested it several times and all seems in order. The true test will be this weekend at a Bar mitzvar i'm shooting, The backups are all on charge just in case.

So all in all I'm very pleased with the service ... just wish they weren't in the city.

Vanessa and Williams Wedding at the Chancery Court Hotel, Holburn

This Sunday I had the honour of photographing Vanessa and Williams wedding. The whole wedding took place at the Chancery Court Hotel in Holburn London. This hotel is fast becoming one of my favourite locations to work in the city and certainly ranks amongst the best (the Land mark followed by the Savoy are still my personal favourites).

As a special surprise for the couple, the brides father had booked the three waiters. This is the second event i've worked with these guys and both times they have been absolutely astounding, I honestly can't say enough about what they add to an event. Without wishing to give too much away the basics are these guys are hidden Opera singers, as always they brought an exceptional twist to the event.

A truly fantastic wedding with beautiful people who I'm sure all had a magnificent day.

Tanya and Deans Wedding, Gosfield Hall, Essex

Recently I had the fantastic honour of photographing dean and Tanyas wedding at the magnificent Gosfield Hall just outside of Braintree. most of my work tends to be in London and its a refreshing change to be asked to photograph at a location more local.

The whole day was incredible and much fun was had by all involved. Shortly into the day the panic started when Tanya realised she may not have packed the wedding rings where they should be. What entailed was cars being despatched to search for the missing jewellery. For a short time the stress levels began to climb but all worries disappeared after a phone call from Dean informing all that they had been found.

American Football Photography at Britbowl

A couple of weeks ago the British American Football season 2009 finished with it's annual finals. the games were played at the keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

This year the Colchester Gladiators had achieved the honour of being the southern champions in Div 2 there BritBowl final was against the Leicester Falcons.

I set out to instead of simple shoot the game to capture the day from as a player would experience it.

Above is a short slide show of images that tell the story form the Gladiators point of view. The game itself has been touted as the best game ever played on British soil .... when you're on the wrong side of a one point game that's hard to believe.

Brads Bar Mitzvar at Brocket Hall

Last weekend I was honoured to be asked to photograph Brads Bar Mitzvar party. The party was held at Brocket Hall an amazing place and a photographers dream.

You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to backgrounds, every time you turn round there's more places to shoot, absolutely incredible.

The week before I'd also photographed the actual Bar Mitzvar practise in the synagogue. Because of religious reasons the actual ceremony is held on Saturdays and is not photographed.

The party went without a hitch and was fantastic! entertainment was supplied by Europes best football skills player and some pretty morbid magicians, that happily shoved nails up their noses amongst other things (the teenagers loved them).

Is there a better job on the planet? I don't think so.

Photography Business Marketing

OK, so I've been hearing from a lot of friends in the business how hard this year is getting and that their ever shrinking amount of clients is starting to be a worry. I then think about the new guys coming into this, the best business on the planet, and it concerns me they are really getting the bad end. Not only do they have very few return clients, many are just starting out and are unsure of how to attract the new business necessary to pay the bills. It worries me that the people with the photographic skills could be falling at the first hurdle because of todays market. I'm very excited to announce that I've just finished writing a one day course that's going to blow your mind, one day and you will walk away with the knowledge and a plan of how to be that business you want to be.

Matt & Kellys Wedding, Wivenhoe House, Colchester

I'm just back from a wedding viewing with Matt & Kelly. They got married a couple of weeks ago at Wivenhoe House, just outside Colchester.

It was a truly fantastic day and even the threatened wet weather stayed away long enough for us to get some great shots.

A couple of years ago I discovered the joys of the "What the Duck" cartoon strip ( You can vist the WTD website here ). It's a comic strip about a duck who's occupation is a photographer. He gets into the scrapes that all photographers have seen at some time with funny outcomes. Anyway watch the video above to see one of the many reasons why I hate photographing people in a studio setting.

Kerry and Andys Engagement Photographs

On another note I was chatting to a friend the other day and they noted about how many more photographers there are now and should we be worried. My answer, in short no. If someone has the ability and skill set to survive in todays market they deserve to be there. However there are plenty of want to be's out there who will struggle. You can normally tell these types as their websites are full of shots of brides and grooms but interestingly there are no shots of guests, best men etc.

The reason being, the brides and grooms are probably hired models and the shots were taken in controlled atmosphere with models who know exactly what looks good. Typically these shots are taken on training days where another skilled photographer has set up the shot and the delogates have taken the photograph (a bit like uncle bobs at a wedding).

As a general rule of thumb if a photographers site doesn't have actual wedding shots (with guests etc) they're probably inexperienced and not real wedding photographers.

Congratulations Colchester Gladiators

Congratulations to the Colchester Gladiators American football team after their massive win last Sunday over the London Olympians.

Before the game both teams were unbeaten they are hotly tipped as the teams to beat in the race for the playoffs and national championship.

The London Olympians are the most successful British team in history and have sent more players to the NFL than any other British team. The Gladiators hadn't beaten the Olympians for 23 years. In fact the gladiators first official game was against the Olympians 26 years ago.

The final result was 28 - 16. However it doesn't end there, as the national finals are a North v South affair it is highly likely this will not be the only time the two teams meet this season.

Bar Mitzvah Party at the Chancery Court Hotel

Congratulations to Ruben and his family on a fantastic Bar Mitzvah party at the Chancery court Hotel in Holburn. It was a truly fantastic day / evening and I'm sure everyone who cam had a fantastic time.

I love working in the central London hotels as they are so "fantastic" inside and really add to anyones day. Every where you turn there's fantastic backgrounds which make for great photographs a photographers dream.

Of course the drawbacks of central London is the parking, however on this day I must have been lucky as I actually managed to park right outside the hotel the first time ever.

Regardless the party went fantastically well with live music from probably my favourite party band "mixed feelings" also special guest was the Southend United footbal captain (Rubens favourite team) and surprise guest Dean Marney whose comedy impressions had everyone laughing all evening.

Taylor & Nateisha's Wedding at the Westcliff Hotel

Recently I was honoured to be asked to cover the wedding of Taylor and Nateisha at the Westcliff hotel in Southend. Although the weather wasn't the greatest (rain all day) the inside of the hotel held many different places for photographs to be taken.

The day started with Nateisha getting ready at her mums house, it was great fun to sit back and capture the images of everything going on. Because of the weather it meant the majority of the images had to be taken inside. Time to get creative ....

Baby Photographs in Southend

Last night I travelled over to Southend to meet up with the bride and groom who are getting married this Friday, it's going to be a great day and is destined to be full of laughs.

We talked through the complete day and set all the timings (which will all change) and generally answered all the questions as they came up.

The grooms sister was also there and she had her beautiful 2 week old daughter. Who can resist photographing a new born? Click on the image or here to see a few of the pictures.

Portrait Session Mandeville, Louisiana.

Above is the last portrait shoot I carried out before leaving Louisiana. It was taken at the Fairview riverside State park near Mandeville (i think). A really great place with lots of interesting backgrounds. Because it was a weekend and a very popular spot there were a lot of Rv's parked as familys settled in to relax.

I had a truely great time in New Orleans and am already looking forward to my next visit.

Fishing Trip

Last time I was in New Orleans we had talked about going fishing but never actually managed to find time. This was not a mistake that was to be repeated.

The day started at 3am with a trip across Lake Pontchatrain to meet up with Randys cousin Keith who had the boat already loaded. A short stop to pick up some shrimp as bait and we headed out. The picture is of the boat being launched, the video is a short clip of the ride to where we were fishing. if you hadn't realised the area was used in the filming of the James Bond movie, Live and Let Die and featured big boat chases and stunts.

Between us we caught several fish which included, Red fish, halibut, stingrays and a few others which I can't remember. We returned to land wet and a little sunburnt but on the whole happy. As the saying goes, "A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work".

Easter Celebrations

Every Easter Randy's parents throw a large family and invite friends and families. This year I was privileged enough to be invited.

Several games were played throughout the day which included an egg throwing contest which was very funny. Incredibly it was won by the youngest entrants who although they never actually managed to catch their egg it didn't break.

Crawfish Boil

Crawfish are a Louisiana delicacy, a small lobster type creature that live in the mud (nick named mud bugs). Boiled up with various Kajun spices and fruits they make excellent eating.

Randys cousin Keith has a big party at his house on Good Friday every year. This year I was lucky enough to be in the area at the right time and was invited to experience the fun. Click on the picture or here to see the slideshow of pictures from the party.

There's a trick to eating them, twist the head pinch the tail then suck out the meat ...... it must be a Lousiana thing because it took me 3 attempts to get one, guess i'll just have to keep practising.

Wedding photographs in Amite, Louisiana, USA

Occasionally I get really lucky and this weekend was no exception. I was chosen to photograph Corie and Josh's fantastic wedding in Amite, Louisiana (near New Orleans).

Because I had a shot a wedding on the previous Sunday it meant I hadn't managed to get a flight till the Wednesday. So there was little time for a pre wedding planning meeting or reconnaissance of the venue. To add to that I was told that for the previous week it had pretty much rained every day, so it was looking likely that the English weather had come in front of me.

However on the day the sun came out and gave us a fantastic day to work with, i don't think I've ever worked with so much light, a truly fantastic event.

Wedding at the Royal Majestic

On Sunday I had the honour of photographing Emma and Barrys wedding.

The venue they had chosen for the reception was the Royal majestic. I've photographed several functions at this location, as a photographer this is a great venue. There's a large area to the rear of the hotel with some interesting garden areas, across the road there's a lake and the actual venue is large enough to cope easily with large groups.

An added bonus for Sundays party was that they had booked fantastic band (mixed feelings). I've seen mixed feelings many times at functions all over the UK and I can honestly say they have never failed to ensure everyone packs the dancefloor all night, as you can see in the top image even the toast master (Howard Robbins) couldn't resist :-).

All in all a fantastic wedding and a great time was had by all.

Now I really, really must start packing for Saturdays wedding (6,000 miles away) ....

Christian the Lion

I first saw this about a year ago but thought it so touching it deserved to be shared. This is not a fake and is absolutely true. The two brothers were interviewed recently and stated that they believed Christian had moved further north in Africa.

Another piece of proof that the internet can be used to retell old stories to new generations.

As any mother will tell you babys change on a daily basis. it's always a complete joy to be asked to capture a new born in the very first days of its life.

The Death of Advertising

I noticed today that ITV (TV company) are laying off a large number of staff and are stopping the production of some of their programmes. This fascinates me as it fits perfectly in to some ideas I've been putting on paper recently (due as an e-book soon). ITV claims that because of the world wide economic crisis and the fact that major businesses have no money to spend advertising on their channel they are having to take these measures. I beg to differ. I believe the reason is because their business model no is longer relevant and has stopped working.

For years the successful way to attract more customers has been to shout louder than your opposition. If you wanted to make more sales you took out a larger advert or ran it more often. It started in newspapers then as technology moved on it went to radio and then TV. This was fine and worked well when the choice was reasonably restricted. People had to sit and watch adverts as there was little choice, now what happens in every household when the adverts come on is either the TV gets turned over or the toilet gets used. We have all chosen to ignore the marketeers adverts. The hard truth that ITV is being taught by it's traditional advertisers is the shotgun type of advertising to the masses no longer works.

As a consumer why would I watch something I don't want to? All I have to do is switch over, and that's if i want to sit in front of the TV. I now have the internet and all the endless possibilities that that can offer, why watch someone elses channel when if I wanted to i could create my own at no cost? If i want information on my favourite NFL team (New Orleans saints) I don't look in my local paper, I read the Times Picayune website. I can then join any number of forums and talk to other like minded people about issues that interest me.

TV is not going to survive in its current state for much longer (except the BBC which is funded without advertising), newspapers are also in the same situation. Radio has a better chance because of its unique arrangements with the motorcar.

So if spending money on advertising in the traditional places no longer works, how should a business go about finding new customers? Well to hear my ideas about that you're going to have to wait a little longer (till I've finished my e-book) :-)

Facebook changes its terms and conditions

Has facebook created it's own downfall by getting too greedy? Before you read this understand i'm not personally opposed to facebook. I don't like some of it's terms and conditions but on the whole it's a positive thing.

For those who aren't aware facebook is a social networking site that is very popular (yes I'm a member) millions of people regularly use it to keep in touch and store images etc.

The problem many people (photographers especially) have with facebook is that they claim (yet to be legally challenged) that they own the right to everything that anyone uploads onto their website. Now if you're a photographer and someone uploads an image that means that facebook now owns all rights to reproduce it. For the majority of people they don't see it as a problem. However what they don't realise is, if for some reason they are thrust into the public limelight, lottery winner, X factor or maybe on a murder charge, facebook will sell every image and every word you ever wrote to the highest bidder.

How many people would want their drunken stag/hen night pictures on the front page of a news paper? That's exactly what is happening to everyday people and facebook are earning the money from it.

Recently facebook tried to change their terms and conditions to say that even if you left the group they still had the rights to all of your stuff. What happened was some eagle eyed bloggers noticed the change and began informing the world. Very quickly facebook realised they could be in trouble and issued statements trying to explain their stance. Two days after the managing director withdrew the changes and reinstated the old terms claiming they were reviewing their stance.

Have they left it too late? What they need to realise is nobody owns a social network, they are just entrusted by their members with it. If they try and enforce rules and regulations onto it they will leave in their millions as people did with myspace. The internet has changed the world and now more than ever before the customer is king.

Here's a group against facebook selling your images join up if you feel that what they are doing is wrong, send them a message that their customers aren't happy.

History Repeating Itself

I've recently restarted writing a project I first began probably twelve months ago, I feel it has become more relevant in today's market and I'm hoping it will be a big help to anyone willing to listen. Every day I'm adding a bit more and the plan is to release it to the photographers who've signed up for my free photography tips on my main website (go to www.martinwilmottphotography.com and click on the tips section, sign up its free).

Anyway whilst doing some research it occurred to me how the music industry is now going back to historical ways of earning money. The Internet has changed the way music is bought, in truth most people under 30 don't buy music any more, they just take it. Now as much as the music industry threaten and occasionally take a few people to court the music industry cannot beat what is happening (incidentally nor can photographers).

In the days before records (and mega big deals) performers and bands would travel around putting on shows and making a living that way. What happened as records became available the tours were geared to selling the new album / record etc and less about making money. What's happening now is the complete reverse, brand new bands are now releasing music free to download to attract people to their tours.

I guess the lesson is the rules of business have changed. The big companies can no longer just destroy the small competition by outspending them, the time for the small business is here and now. There has never been a better time for a small business to pitch itself against the big boys.

Rain rain and more rain

Ok so i know the english are famous for making small talk about the weather but you've got to admit we have got something to talk about.

A few days ago the field at the bottom of my road was full af laughing and screaming families knee deep in snowball fights and building snowmen. Today when i went down there the river had burst it's banks and completely floooded a massive area.

The photograph i've attached was taken on my phone (blackberry quality is pretty poor). The circle of logs sticking up in the air is in fact a kiddies play area that was put in last summer. This is normally about 15 metres fropm the river bank. I would guess it's at least two foot under water at the moment. The bridges accross the water are impossible to reach unless you use a boat.

The weather men are saying we had a months worth of rain last night in 8 hours. Hmmm all of a sudden New Orleans is looking very inviting again.

Howard Robbins Wedding

Congratulations to Howard Robbins and his beautiful new wife Janine on their excellent wedding.

Every wedding is different, some organised, some less so but when one of the highest ranking toastmasters in the country is getting married it's like a military operation.

The actual wedding took place on New years eve with the party going on till the early hours of 2009. It was a truly fantastic day and the guest list read like a who's who of the wedding industry. Some of the best caterers, toastmasters, photographers, videoographers in the country were there to wish the couple the very best.

It felt great to spend new years eve at a party where I knew a lot of the guests. The reception was at the Royal Majestic which is fast becoming a very popular venue in London.

It was one of those jobs where you new everything had been taken care of, including the excellent "surprise" entertainment after the meals.

Even though he was the groom he just couldn't help making sure everyone was briefed correctly .... "Howard that's why you have a toast master ... lol"

Winter Weddings

First things first if you're reading this today, happy new year!

As a pro photographer on of the biggest challenges of a winter wedding is the lack of light. Especially if like me you love to shoot out side. Capturing a good exposure in the dark can be extremely challenging and takes a lot more than putting the camera in programme mode and attaching a flash. At the same time the Bride and groom are normally freezing and all they want to do is get back into the warm.

I was lucky in the early part of my photography career there were no digital cameras and I used a manual Hasselblad. exposure and flash settings all had to be worked out manually which meant unless you didn't want to stay in the business long you soon learnt how to work out the best settings for different lighting. I guess with modern cameras we've all become a little bit spoilt, but it's occasions like the one above (taken last week) that can separate the people who take pictures and those that make them.

A piece of advice for anyone wanting to learn photography would be, go and buy a cheap film manual camera and learn how shutterspeeds and apertures work together. Modern cameras are fantastic at working out exposures but they can't think and can (and often do) get things wrong.

Home for Christmas

So I finally returned to the UK about a week before Christmas day. I had a fantastic time in New Orleans and made some lasting friendships. It's looking likely with the work building up on that side of the pond I may well be flying back over there as early as February.

However having returned to the UK and it being Christmas doesn't mean I've had any time off. I've already shot a wedding with another one New years Eve. Truth be told I'm at my happiest when I'm taking pictures so I have no complaints (editing them is a different story though).

Anyway happy Christmas to anyone and everyone and I hope the New Year brings you everything you ever wanted.

Coincidently, If this year didn't bring you everything you wanted how much of that was your own fault?

Saints v Falcons (and loads of other stuff)

My final chance to watch a live NFL football game this year came as the Atlanta Falcons visited New Orleans. the game was a fantastic nail biter and very good advert for the game finishing in another win for the Saints (that's 3-0 when I watch them live).

The stadium was its normal noisy self for anyone who has never been to a regular season game the home filed advantage is hard to explain as the noise created by the crowd in an effort to put off the opposing teams offence is incredible. The crowd are whipped into a fury by several dressed members of the public. In the section where we sat the most prominent was Holy Moses and also a guy dressed as a robot.

I was extremely lucky in that my trip coincided with the State high school Championships which were also held in the Superdome. As I have already mentioned I have been really impressed with the high school football I've seen since I've been here but the level stepped up when it came to the finals.

It also gave me a chance to experience what the view was like from the middle tier on the fifty yard line .... awesome.

Friday Night Lights (again)

A mega busy week saw my first ever American thanksgiving on Thursday. From what I can understand it's based loosely around when the initial settlers first met and broke bread with the native Indians. The modern version is a large family get together and a huge meal and is a sort of dress rehearsal for Christmas.

Friday saw us travelling down the Belle Chase where the local high school team were in the football play-offs. Whilst the NFL and the College games I have taken in whilst I have been here have been fantastic there's something special about high school football. I guess what has impressed me most is the absolute professionalism shown by the kids on the field and their coaches. To witness the play changes on the line of scrimmage was nothing short of amazing as every player firstly looked to the sideline then their wristband (to read the play being called).

As usual there was all the pomp and circumstance of bands, cheerleaders and fireworks.

Saturday (today) we went in search of the school Brett Favre attended. Brett Favre is a legendary quarterback in the NFL and until this season he played continually for the Green Bay packers. He is currently playing (well) for the New York Jets.

The school is called Hancock High and is based in Kiln, Mississippi. After a bit of searching we found the school and its football field where the statue of Brett Favre has been erected.

Although it was raining at the time (and most of the day) It was well worth the trip.

Saints v Packers in the Superdome

Monday night football in America is sacred. Most NFL games are played on Sundays, the Monday night game is traditionally the only game on that night meaning the whole nation watches that game.

This Sunday the New Orleans Saints played host to the Green Bay Packers and it promised to be a mouth watering shoot out with both teams having high scoring offences. Whilst I have been to NFL games before this is the first time i've truely experienced what a home field advantage is all about in the NFL. When the hometeam is on defnce the crowd really does play its part in making sure the opposing offence has trouble being heard.

LSU v Ole Miss College football

Yesterday (Saturday) was the last home game of the LSU Tigers college season. Previous plans were that a large group of us were to go to the game however due to flight delays ect it fell to Brandy and myself to go and watch the game.

Everyone around this area supports LSU as it's their local college however Brandy had been a cheerleader for Ole Miss and had no trouble letting everyone know who she would be shouting for.

College football in the States is more of a full day experience rather than just turn up for the game and then go home. All around the stadium fans turn up early and start to tailgate long before the game is due to start.

Opening kick off

LSU really only had one spell of about five minutes in the whole game where they looked like they could make a game of it. In truth Ole Miss were by far the better team so it was Brandy who was very happy at the end of the day. The final result was Ole Miss 31 LSU 13.

Mud bugs etc

One of the big things the people of the New Orleans area are into is sea food. All sorts of crab, fish and oyster can be found in most restaurants.

On Thursday I experienced (was talked into) trying my first mud bug or crayfish to give it it's proper name.

It's a small prawn (shrimp) type creature that getting to the meat is a bit like solving the Rubiks cube. Of course the locals can skin and eat about ten in the time it takes me to do one but i guess that's the perk of experience.

The French Quarter New Orleans

Saturday night we decided to spend some time in down town New Orleans and check out the French quarter.

My friends Randy and Paige were excellent guides and made sure I saw all the things the French Quarter is famous for.

I didn't take my camera but instead borrowed Randys small point and shoot. For a small camera it doesn't take bad pictures and I even experimented a little with the night shot feature although in fairness it really should be used on a tripod. Another added bonus is the ability to shoot video ....

The Quarter holds much history and many places remain as they were originally built by the French settlers. In amongst the history are many bars and clubs where the locals and tourists let their hair down and party all night long.
